Involuntary Migration and the Associated Schism: Case of a River Valley Project in India
In: Journal für Entwicklungspolitik, Band 11, Heft 3, S. 349-363
ISSN: 0258-2384
Examines the issue of development-related involuntary migration using the case of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP), an interstate dam project on India's Narmada River. The SSP has been opposed by environmentalists, social activists, & scientists for a variety of reasons, including technical infeasibility & the mass displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, many from tribal villages. The specific populations affected & the resettlement plans in each of the three states involved (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh) are described. This discussion points to the minimal need for a uniform & legally binding resettlement & compensation policy that covers all affected persons. The wisdom of viewing such development projects as the solution to economic problems is questioned. Such projects favor international corporations & elites, ignore principles of socially sustainable development, & have human costs. 1 Table, 1 Map, 9 References. Adapted from the source document.
